Leverage trading means borrowing capital to open a position larger than your own funds would allow, magnifying both potential gains and potential losses relative to trading with your own money alone. In crypto, leverage is most commonly accessed through margin trading or perpetual futures, and it is consistently one of the fastest ways for inexperienced traders to lose their entire deposit.
Leverage itself is just a multiplier — 2x, 10x, 100x — expressing how much larger your position is relative to the collateral (margin) you've posted. A 10x leveraged position means a $1,000 deposit controls $10,000 worth of exposure. The mechanism isn't inherently reckless; it's a standard financial tool used across traditional markets too. What makes it dangerous is how nonlinearly risk scales with the multiplier, especially in an asset class as volatile as crypto.
Margin: the collateral behind the position
Margin is the collateral you post to open and maintain a leveraged position. Initial margin is what's required to open the position; maintenance margin is the minimum collateral level required to keep it open. If the position's losses erode your margin down to the maintenance threshold, the exchange issues a margin call or, more commonly in crypto, automatically liquidates the position to prevent losses from exceeding your posted collateral.
There are two primary margin modes — cross margin and isolated margin — which differ in whether your entire account balance or just the funds allocated to a specific position back that position's potential losses.
Why liquidation risk scales sharply with leverage
The relationship between leverage and how far price needs to move against you before liquidation is inverse and steep, not linear. At 2x leverage, price needs to move roughly 50% against your position before your margin is wiped out. At 10x leverage, that threshold drops to roughly 10%. At 50x leverage, it drops to roughly 2%. A routine daily price swing — entirely normal for crypto — can be enough to fully liquidate an extremely high-leverage position, while the same swing would barely dent a low-leverage or unleveraged position.

These are simplified approximations that ignore fees and funding, but they illustrate the core point: higher leverage doesn't just mean bigger potential gains, it means a dramatically smaller margin of error before the position is forcibly closed out.
Leverage magnifies losses, not just gains
It's easy to focus on the upside of leverage — a 10x position doubles in value if the underlying asset rises 10%, versus needing a 100% move to double an unleveraged position. But the same multiplier applies symmetrically to losses, and because liquidation forcibly closes the position at a loss, leveraged trading has a form of asymmetry that pure spot holding doesn't: you can lose your entire margin deposit even if the asset later recovers, simply because the position was closed before the recovery happened.
This is fundamentally different from holding an asset unleveraged through a drawdown, where — barring the asset going to zero — there's no forced exit point, and a full recovery in price means a full recovery in position value.
Funding costs and other ongoing expenses
Leveraged positions held via perpetual futures also accrue funding payments periodically, which can add a meaningful ongoing cost (or occasionally a benefit) depending on market positioning. Margin trading through a lending-style mechanism typically accrues interest on the borrowed portion as well. These costs compound the longer a leveraged position is held, making leverage generally better suited to shorter holding periods than long-term directional bets.
Practical risk-management approaches
Traders who use leverage deliberately tend to combine several practices: using lower leverage ratios than the maximum offered (many experienced traders rarely exceed 3–5x even when 50x or 100x is available), setting a stop-loss well before the liquidation price rather than relying on the exchange's forced close, and sizing positions using a defined risk percentage of total portfolio value rather than committing a large share of capital to any single leveraged trade.
Who leverage trading is (and isn't) suited for
Leverage is a tool for traders with a specific, time-bound thesis and an active risk-management plan — not a way to "get more exposure" to an asset you believe in for the long term, since ongoing costs and liquidation risk work against a buy-and-hold approach. For long-term conviction, holding the underlying asset directly, or exploring lower-risk approaches like DCA, avoids the forced-exit risk that leverage introduces entirely.
