Cross margin shares your entire available account balance as collateral across all open positions, while isolated margin restricts a position's risk to only the specific amount of collateral you allocate to it. Both are ways of managing what backs a leveraged position, and the choice between them fundamentally changes how a single bad trade can affect the rest of your account.
Neither mode is universally safer — each concentrates risk differently, and the right choice depends on how many positions you're running, how much capital you're willing to risk per trade, and how actively you monitor your positions.
How isolated margin works
With isolated margin, you allocate a specific, fixed amount of collateral to a single position when opening it. If that position moves against you enough to exhaust the allocated margin, it gets liquidated — but the loss is capped at exactly the amount you assigned to that position. The rest of your account balance remains untouched and available for other positions or withdrawal.
This makes isolated margin's worst-case outcome predictable and bounded from the moment you open the trade: you know precisely the maximum dollar amount at risk, regardless of how extreme the adverse price move turns out to be.
How cross margin works
With cross margin, all positions on the account share a single collateral pool — your entire available balance. If one position starts approaching liquidation, the exchange can draw on your other available balance (including unrealized gains from other positions, in some implementations) to keep that position open longer, effectively giving it a larger buffer against being liquidated prematurely.
The tradeoff is that your entire account balance is now exposed to that one position's risk. If the position moves against you severely enough, it can draw down your whole balance rather than just a portion you specifically allocated to it, potentially liquidating your entire account rather than just closing one position.

Why cross margin can reduce premature liquidation

Why isolated margin can protect the rest of the portfolio
The flip side is that isolated margin contains the damage from any single bad trade. If a trader is running several independent positions and one goes badly wrong due to an unexpected event specific to that asset, isolated margin ensures the fallout is limited to the capital assigned to that trade — the rest of the portfolio, and any other open positions, remain unaffected. This containment is particularly valuable when trading multiple uncorrelated assets, where a problem in one shouldn't logically threaten the others.
A practical scenario
Imagine a trader with $10,000 in their account running two separate leveraged positions, each allocated $2,000 in isolated margin. If one position gets liquidated due to a sharp adverse move, the loss is capped at that $2,000 — the trader still has $8,000 available. Under cross margin with the same two positions, if one position starts approaching liquidation, the exchange could draw on the full $10,000 (minus whatever is allocated to the other open position) to keep it open — potentially avoiding a premature liquidation, but also potentially exposing significantly more capital if the adverse move continues rather than reversing.
Choosing between the two
Traders managing a single, carefully sized position often gravitate toward isolated margin for the predictability of a bounded worst case. Traders running multiple correlated positions, or who actively manage margin levels and add collateral as needed, sometimes prefer cross margin for the reduced premature-liquidation risk — but this requires active monitoring, since the downside (a much larger loss) is correspondingly bigger if the thesis is simply wrong.
Beginners are generally better served starting with isolated margin, since it enforces a hard cap on losses per trade without requiring active, continuous account monitoring — a meaningful advantage when still learning how leverage and liquidation mechanics actually behave in practice.
