A perpetual futures contract, or "perp," is a derivative that lets traders speculate on an asset's price with leverage and without an expiration date, distinguishing it from traditional futures contracts that settle on a fixed date. Perps have become the dominant derivative product in crypto trading, often accounting for far more daily volume than spot trading on the same assets.
Perpetual futures were popularized by crypto exchanges specifically because traditional futures — which require rolling positions into a new contract every time one expires — are cumbersome for an asset class that trades continuously, 24/7, with no natural settlement calendar. A perpetual contract solves that by simply never expiring, replacing the expiration mechanism with a different tool entirely.
No expiry, so how does it track spot price?
Without an expiration date forcing convergence with the spot price, a perpetual contract could in theory drift indefinitely away from the actual market price of the underlying asset. When the perpetual trades below spot, the payment flows the other way. This constant nudge is what keeps perps roughly aligned with the underlying spot market despite having no expiration date to force convergence.
How trading a perp works in practice
A trader opens a long position by essentially betting the price will rise, or a short position betting it will fall, posting collateral (margin) rather than the full notional value of the position. This is where leverage comes in — a trader might post $1,000 in margin to control a $10,000 notional position, magnifying both potential gains and potential losses.
If the position moves against the trader enough that their margin can no longer cover potential losses, the exchange automatically closes the position — a process called liquidation — to prevent losses exceeding the posted collateral.

Why perps are so popular in crypto
Perpetual futures let traders take leveraged directional bets without needing to own the underlying asset, without the operational hassle of contract rollover, and often with deeper liquidity than spot markets for the same asset on the same exchange. This makes them attractive for both short-term speculation and hedging existing spot holdings — a trader who holds an asset and wants to hedge against a short-term decline can open a short perpetual position without selling their actual holdings.
They're also comparatively simple to access: most major crypto derivatives exchanges offer perpetuals with a few clicks, no options-style complexity, and continuous 24/7 trading that matches how crypto spot markets already operate.
Key risks specific to perps
Leverage magnifies both gains and losses, and liquidation can happen quickly during volatile moves — sometimes within minutes, especially with high leverage settings. Funding rate payments, while usually small individually, can add up meaningfully for positions held over long periods, particularly during periods of extreme one-sided sentiment when funding rates spike.
Perpetual futures also introduce counterparty and platform risk that doesn't exist with simply holding an asset in a self-custodied wallet — the exchange or protocol facilitating the perp must remain solvent and properly manage its risk engine, and history includes instances of exchanges mishandling extreme volatility events, socializing losses among users, or suffering broader platform failures.
Perps on decentralized platforms
Decentralized perpetual exchanges have emerged as an alternative to centralized derivatives platforms, using smart contracts and often a mix of liquidity pools and oracle price feeds instead of a centralized matching engine and custodian.
