What Is Lido? How Ethereum's Largest Liquid Staking Protocol Works

Lido is a decentralized protocol that lets users stake ETH without running their own validator, in exchange for a liquid token called stETH that represents their staked position and accrues staking rewards automatically. It is, by deposited value, the largest liquid staking protocol on Ethereum, and understanding it means understanding both how liquid staking generally works and the specific centralization tradeoffs that come with being the largest player in that space.
How depositing works
When you deposit ETH into Lido, you don't stake it yourself. Instead, Lido pools deposits and distributes them across a curated set of professional node operators, who run the actual validators on depositors' behalf. In return, you receive stETH at roughly a 1:1 ratio to your deposit, and that balance increases over time — Lido uses a "rebasing" mechanism where the stETH token balance in your wallet grows daily to reflect accrued staking rewards, rather than the token price rising against ETH.
Because stETH is a normal, transferable ERC-20 token, you can hold it, use it as DeFi collateral, or trade it on a DEX — all while it continues earning the underlying staking yield. This is the core value proposition of liquid staking generally: it removes the illiquidity that comes with locking ETH directly with a validator.
Validator delegation and node operators
Lido doesn't run validators itself. It's governed by the Lido DAO, which votes on adding or removing a permissioned set of professional node operators — entities that run the validator infrastructure and are responsible for validator uptime and avoiding slashing. Depositor funds are algorithmically distributed across this operator set to balance stake and avoid overconcentration in any single operator.
This is a meaningful design choice compared to some liquid staking alternatives: Lido's node operators are known, vetted entities rather than a fully permissionless set, which the protocol argues improves reliability and reduces slashing risk, at the cost of being less permissionless than the validator set could theoretically be.
Withdrawals and the stETH peg
Since Ethereum enabled staking withdrawals, stETH can be redeemed for ETH directly through Lido's withdrawal queue, typically processed within a period ranging from minutes to a few days depending on network-wide withdrawal demand. Before withdrawals were live, and still today during periods of high queue demand, stETH also trades on secondary markets — usually very close to ETH's price, but not guaranteed to be exactly 1:1, since it reflects market supply and demand as much as the underlying redemption value.
Centralization concerns specific to Lido
Lido's scale is precisely what generates its most-discussed risk. Because it has, at various points, controlled a very large share of all staked ETH, critics have raised concerns that fall into a few categories:
- Validator set concentration. If one liquid staking provider controls a large enough share of all active validators, it raises questions about consensus-level influence — for instance, around governance forks or chain-level decisions where validator voting weight matters.
- Governance token concentration. Decisions about which node operators to add or remove, and protocol parameter changes, are made by holders of Lido's governance token, which introduces a separate layer of concentration risk distinct from the validator layer itself.
- Smart contract and operator risk. Depositors are trusting Lido's contracts to be free of critical bugs and trusting the curated node operator set collectively to avoid the kind of slashing events that would reduce stETH's backing.
The Lido community and the wider Ethereum community have discussed self-limiting measures — including social commitments to cap market share — precisely because of these concerns, which is a useful illustration that liquid staking's convenience comes bundled with governance and concentration questions that don't exist for someone running their own solo validator.
