Native ETH Staking vs Liquid Staking Tokens: Which to Choose

Compares locking ETH in your own validator against holding a liquid staking token like stETH, covering liquidity, risk, and yield tradeoffs.

Native staking means locking ETH directly with a validator you (or a staking service acting purely as an operator) control, while a liquid staking token represents a pooled staking position that stays tradeable and usable elsewhere in DeFi while it earns rewards. Both ultimately secure Ethereum's proof-of-stake network and earn similar underlying rewards; the real decision is about liquidity, technical responsibility, and the additional risks each path introduces.

Native staking: locking ETH with a validator

To run a solo validator, you need 32 ETH, validator client software, and a reasonably reliable internet connection and uptime, since extended downtime results in small reward penalties and serious misbehavior (like double-signing) results in slashing — a portion of your stake being burned. In return, you earn staking rewards paid directly to your validator, with no intermediary layer and no smart contract risk beyond the protocol itself.

Some staking services offer "native" staking-as-a-service, where you still technically hold the withdrawal credentials but the provider runs the validator infrastructure for you — reducing the operational burden while keeping your ETH in a form that isn't a liquid, tradeable token.

The core tradeoff of any native staking approach is illiquidity: your ETH (or the ETH you've delegated) is committed to the validator lifecycle. Exiting a validator and withdrawing funds takes time that varies with how many other validators are exiting simultaneously, and while that ETH is staked, it can't be used as collateral, traded, or deployed in other DeFi strategies.

Liquid staking tokens: staying flexible

Liquid staking, covered in depth in our liquid staking guide, solves the illiquidity problem by issuing a token — like Lido's stETH, described in our dedicated Lido explainer — that represents your staked position and can be freely transferred, traded, or used as collateral, all while continuing to accrue the underlying staking yield.

This unlocks real flexibility: you can supply a liquid staking token to a lending market, pair it in a liquidity pool, or simply hold a tradeable asset instead of a locked position. But it adds two layers of risk that native staking doesn't have:

  1. Smart contract risk. You're trusting the liquid staking protocol's contracts to be secure and correctly implemented.
  2. Peg or redemption risk. The liquid token generally trades very close to the value of the underlying ETH plus rewards, but it isn't guaranteed to be exactly 1:1 at all times — market stress, or a surge in redemption demand relative to the withdrawal queue's processing speed, can cause temporary discounts.

Yield: similar, not identical

Both approaches ultimately draw from the same source — the protocol-level rewards Ethereum pays validators for proposing and attesting blocks, plus a share of transaction priority fees. Liquid staking protocols typically take a small fee (often around 10% of rewards) to cover node operator payments and protocol treasury, which means net yield to the depositor is usually a shade lower than running a fully solo validator with zero fees — offset for most people by not needing 32 ETH or any technical setup at all.

Which one fits your situation

Native staking (solo or via staking-as-a-service) suits ETH you don't need liquid, where you value minimizing smart contract exposure, and where either you have 32 ETH or you're comfortable delegating operations while still holding withdrawal rights. Liquid staking tokens suit smaller holdings, situations where you want staking yield without giving up the ability to use that value elsewhere, or DeFi strategies that specifically require a tradeable, composable asset. Neither is objectively "safer" across the board — native staking removes a contract-risk layer but sacrifices liquidity and requires more ETH and technical involvement; liquid staking restores flexibility at the cost of trusting an additional protocol.

Whichever path you take, keep basic wallet security practices in mind — validator keys and the wallet holding liquid staking tokens are both high-value targets.

Bottom line

Native staking and liquid staking tokens earn similar underlying rewards, but they sit on opposite ends of a liquidity-versus-simplicity tradeoff. Native staking demands more ETH and technical commitment in exchange for no additional contract risk; liquid staking removes those barriers and unlocks composability, in exchange for trusting a protocol's smart contracts and accepting a small fee. Decide based on how much you value liquidity against how much additional counterparty and contract risk you're willing to hold.
