Liquid restaking tokens explained: how LRTs represent restaked ETH positions and differ from standard liquid staking tokens.

Liquid restaking tokens (LRTs) are tokenized representations of ETH that has been both staked on Ethereum and additionally restaked into services like EigenLayer, letting holders earn combined staking-plus-restaking rewards while keeping a liquid, tradeable token instead of a locked, illiquid position.

Building on Liquid Staking

To understand LRTs, it helps to start with standard liquid staking tokens. Normally, staked ETH is illiquid — locked into a validator until you complete a voluntary exit and withdrawal process. Liquid staking protocols solve this by issuing a token (like stETH-style tokens from various providers) that represents your staked position and its accruing rewards, which you can freely trade, use as collateral, or deploy elsewhere in DeFi while the underlying ETH keeps validating in the background.

LRTs extend this same basic concept one step further: instead of just representing plain staked ETH, they represent ETH that's been staked and then also restaked (via EigenLayer or similar restaking protocols) into one or more Actively Validated Services (AVSs), layering restaking rewards on top of ordinary staking rewards.

How LRTs Typically Work

An LRT protocol generally:

  1. Accepts deposits of ETH or existing liquid staking tokens.
  2. Stakes (or uses already-staked) ETH and additionally opts it into restaking with one or more AVSs on the user's behalf.
  3. Issues an LRT to the depositor, representing their proportional share of the underlying restaked position and its accruing rewards.
  4. Manages which specific AVSs the pooled restaked ETH is exposed to — a decision made by the protocol's operators or governance, not typically by individual depositors picking AVSs one by one.

The LRT itself can then be held, traded, or used as collateral in other DeFi protocols, similar to how a standard liquid staking token can be used.

Layered Risk: Why LRTs Carry More Risk Than Plain Liquid Staking

Because LRTs sit on top of both staking and restaking, they inherit risk from multiple layers simultaneously:

  • Base Ethereum staking risk, including slashing for validator misbehavior.
  • Restaking protocol risk, including smart contract risk in the restaking platform itself and slashing conditions tied to whichever AVSs the pooled stake is opted into, as discussed in our restaking explainer.
  • LRT protocol risk, including smart contract risk in the LRT issuer's own contracts, and the operational/governance risk of trusting that protocol's choices about which AVSs to support and how to manage the underlying restaked position.
  • Liquidity and peg risk. Like other liquid staking tokens, an LRT's market price can trade at a discount to its underlying redemption value during periods of stress or uncertainty, since the token's liquidity depends on market makers and trading activity rather than a guaranteed, instant redemption path.

Why the Extra Yield Isn't Free

It's tempting to view LRTs purely as "liquid staking, but with a higher yield" — but the higher yield directly compensates for the additional layers of risk described above, not a market inefficiency being captured for free. Treating the extra yield as pure upside without weighing the compounding smart contract and slashing risk underneath it is a common mistake worth avoiding.

Practical Due Diligence Before Using an LRT

  • Understand which specific AVSs the underlying restaked ETH is exposed to, and research those AVSs' own maturity and audit history where that information is disclosed.
  • Review the LRT protocol's own audit history and time in operation, recognizing this is a newer category of protocol than standard liquid staking.
  • Check the token's trading liquidity and historical peg behavior, since a thin market can mean a wider gap between the LRT's price and its actual underlying redemption value during stress.

Bottom Line

Liquid restaking tokens let holders earn combined staking and restaking rewards while retaining a liquid, tradeable token, but they stack the risks of Ethereum staking, restaking protocol exposure, and the LRT issuer's own smart contracts on top of one another. The additional yield reflects additional, compounding risk rather than a free bonus, and the category is meaningfully newer and less battle-tested than plain Ethereum staking itself.
