The core difference between an NFT and cryptocurrency is fungibility: cryptocurrency (like Bitcoin or ETH) is fungible, meaning every unit is identical and interchangeable, while an NFT (non-fungible token) is unique — no two NFTs are interchangeable, even within the same collection.

Both are technically tokens that live on a blockchain, and both rely on the same underlying cryptographic and consensus infrastructure, but they represent fundamentally different kinds of things and serve different purposes.

What "fungible" actually means

Fungibility is a concept borrowed from traditional economics: a dollar bill is fungible because any dollar bill is functionally identical to any other — you don't care which specific physical bill you receive in change. Cryptocurrencies are designed the same way: one ETH is worth exactly the same as any other ETH, and they can be split, combined, and exchanged without any unit being "special."

NFTs invert this. Each token has a unique identifier, and — even within a collection where every NFT might look superficially similar — no two are interchangeable. Trading one NFT for another isn't like exchanging two dollar bills; it's more like trading one specific painting for a different specific painting.

Why this distinction matters practically

Because cryptocurrency units are interchangeable, they work well as a medium of exchange or a store of value — the entire point is that any unit works the same as any other. NFTs deliberately sacrifice that interchangeability to represent something specific: a particular piece of art, a specific plot of virtual land, a unique in-game item, or proof of attending a specific event.

This also means valuation works very differently. A cryptocurrency's price reflects the market's view of the entire fungible supply; an individual NFT's value depends on its specific traits, rarity relative to its collection (see our guide on NFT rarity), provenance, and demand for that exact item — two NFTs from the same collection can have wildly different values depending on their individual characteristics.

Semi-fungible tokens: a middle ground

Some tokens don't fit neatly into either category. ERC-1155, for example, supports "semi-fungible" tokens — multiple identical copies of the same item (say, 500 identical event tickets) that are fungible with each other within that batch, but distinct as a token type from other items in the same contract. A common point of confusion

People sometimes describe NFTs as "a type of cryptocurrency," which is technically imprecise — both are blockchain-based tokens, but the defining economic property of cryptocurrency (fungibility) is exactly what NFTs lack by design. It's more accurate to think of them as two different applications of the same underlying blockchain technology, built to serve opposite goals around interchangeability.

How each is typically stored and used

Cryptocurrency held in a wallet is generally just a balance figure associated with your address — spend some, and your balance simply decreases by that amount, with no distinction between "which" units you spent. NFTs, by contrast, are tracked individually: your wallet holds a list of specific token IDs, each pointing to its own distinct metadata describing what that particular item actually is. This difference in how each asset type is represented on-chain is a direct consequence of the fungible/non-fungible distinction, and it's part of why wallet interfaces typically display cryptocurrency balances and NFT collections in entirely separate views.

Why the distinction matters for beginners specifically

New entrants to crypto sometimes assume all blockchain-based tokens work the same way, which can lead to confusion about basic questions like why an NFT can't simply be "split" the way a cryptocurrency balance can, or why an NFT's price can vary so dramatically from another item that looks superficially similar. Understanding fungibility as the core organizing concept clears up most of this confusion at once — once you know an asset is non-fungible, questions about splitting, uniform pricing, and interchangeability all resolve naturally from that single property.
