Limitations of on-chain analysis
On-chain data is fully transparent about what happened on the blockchain, but it can't see activity happening off-chain — trades between custodial accounts on the same exchange, for instance, don't create new on-chain transactions and are invisible to on-chain analysis entirely, even though they represent real market activity. This means on-chain data, particularly around exchange flows, can understate or misrepresent actual trading activity depending on how much volume happens off-chain versus directly on it.
On-chain data also requires interpretation, and the same raw data can be read differently by different analysts. A large coin movement from one wallet to another could represent a sale being prepared, an internal exchange wallet reshuffling, a custody provider consolidating holdings, or simply an individual moving funds to a new personal wallet for unrelated reasons — the transaction itself doesn't announce its motive, and misreading these movements is a common source of on-chain analysis error.

Various dedicated platforms and blockchain explorers aggregate and visualize on-chain metrics, ranging from basic transaction and address counts to more sophisticated derived metrics like MVRV and realized cap. Reviewing TVL data across DeFi protocols and chain-level activity is itself a form of on-chain analysis, focused specifically on capital deployed within decentralized finance rather than broader holder behavior.
Why on-chain analysis matters for long-term perspective
On-chain analysis tends to be more useful for medium- to long-term context than for short-term trading decisions, since most on-chain metrics change gradually and reflect underlying trends in holder behavior rather than moment-to-moment price fluctuations. It's a complementary layer to, not a replacement for, understanding market cycles and price-based technical analysis.
