What is Linea? Learn how ConsenSys's zkEVM rollup works, its MetaMask integration, and how it compares to other zk-rollups.
Linea is an Ethereum layer 2 network built by ConsenSys, the company behind MetaMask and Infura, using zk-rollup technology with a zkEVM designed for close compatibility with existing Ethereum smart contracts and developer tooling.
Because ConsenSys also builds MetaMask, one of the most widely used crypto wallets, and Infura, a major blockchain infrastructure provider, Linea launched with a distribution advantage few other rollups have: direct integration paths into tools millions of developers and users already rely on.
How Linea's zkEVM works

ConsenSys's ownership of MetaMask has meant Linea can be promoted directly within one of the most widely installed crypto wallets, giving it a distribution channel that independent rollup teams generally lack. This is a business and ecosystem advantage rather than a technical one, and it doesn't change Linea's underlying security model, but it's a meaningful factor in how quickly a new L2 can attract users and liquidity.

Like other zk-rollups, Linea's transaction costs combine the computational expense of generating validity proofs with the cost of posting proof and state data back to Ethereum. Linea has invested in proof aggregation and recursive proving techniques aimed at spreading these costs across more transactions, part of a broader industry effort across zk-rollups to reduce the per-transaction overhead of zero-knowledge proof generation, which has historically been more expensive than the fraud-proof approach used by optimistic rollups.
Dual burn mechanism
