GLP is the liquidity provider token for GMX, a decentralized perpetual futures exchange, representing a share of a multi-asset liquidity pool that acts as the counterparty to traders' leveraged long and short positions. GLP holders earn a share of trading fees generated by the platform, but they also take on the risk of being on the other side of every trade — meaning GLP's value can fall when traders, in aggregate, profit.

How GMX's liquidity pool works

Unlike an order-book exchange where buyers and sellers are matched directly against each other, GMX uses a shared pool of assets (composed of a basket of major cryptocurrencies and stablecoins) to back all open positions on the platform. When a trader opens a leveraged long or short position, they're effectively trading against this pool rather than against another individual trader.

GLP represents proportional ownership of this pool. When someone mints GLP, they deposit one of the accepted assets, and their GLP entitles them to a share of the pool's total value, which rises and falls based on the combined value of the underlying assets plus the platform's trading activity.

Where GLP's yield comes from

GLP holders earn from two main sources:

  • Trading fees — GMX charges fees on position opens, closes, and (for leveraged positions held over time) a borrowing fee, a meaningful share of which is distributed to GLP holders as the pool's yield.
  • Trader losses — because GLP is the counterparty to every open position, if traders collectively lose money on their positions (which, in aggregate, tends to happen more often than not on leveraged trading platforms generally), that loss flows to the pool, benefiting GLP holders. Conversely, if traders collectively profit, that profit is paid out of the pool, reducing GLP's value.

This is a structurally different yield source from a typical DEX liquidity pool, where LPs earn purely from trading fees and face impermanent loss driven by price divergence between paired assets, rather than from being a direct counterparty to leveraged trader profit and loss.

Why GLP can lose value even if underlying asset prices don't crash

A key risk specific to GLP: even during periods when the pool's underlying assets hold steady in price, GLP can still lose value if traders, in aggregate, are profitable — for example, during a strong, sustained trend that many leveraged traders correctly position for. This means GLP isn't purely exposed to the price risk of its underlying basket; it carries an additional, somewhat unpredictable exposure to how skilled or lucky the platform's traders are as a group during any given period.

Rebalancing and basket composition

The pool's composition is actively managed within target weightings for each asset, and minting or redeeming GLP with different assets is priced to nudge the pool back toward its target weights — minting with an underweight asset is cheaper, redeeming an overweight asset is cheaper, creating a built-in incentive for arbitrageurs to help keep the basket balanced.

How this compares to other DeFi yield sources

Most DeFi yield sources described in our yield farming guide come from a clear, identifiable payer — a borrower's interest, a trader's swap fee — and are relatively easy to reason about in terms of who benefits when. GLP's yield is harder to attribute in advance: it depends on the collective outcome of many independent traders' positions over a given period, which can shift with market conditions in ways that are difficult to predict from the outside. This makes historical GLP returns a weaker guide to future performance than they might first appear, since past periods of calm, range-bound trading (favorable to GLP) don't guarantee similar conditions ahead.

Risks worth understanding before minting GLP
