Cross margin and isolated margin are two ways a decentralized perpetuals exchange can allocate your collateral: cross margin shares one collateral pool across all your open positions, while isolated margin locks separate collateral to each individual position.

Both are risk-management settings that determine what happens when a position moves against you — specifically, what collateral is at stake and what gets liquidated first. Choosing between them is one of the more consequential decisions a trader makes before opening a leveraged position on any DeFi derivatives protocol.

How isolated margin works

With isolated margin, you allocate a specific amount of collateral to a single position. If that position loses value and its margin ratio falls below the maintenance threshold, only the collateral assigned to that position is at risk of liquidation. Your other positions and any unallocated wallet balance are untouched.

This makes losses predictable and contained: you know your maximum loss on any given trade is capped at the margin you assigned to it. The tradeoff is that the position can get liquidated even if you have plenty of spare collateral sitting in your account but not assigned to that specific position.

How cross margin works

With cross margin, all your open positions draw from — and are backstopped by — a single shared collateral balance. If one position starts losing money, the exchange can pull from your account's overall balance (including gains from other winning positions) to keep it from being liquidated.

This gives individual positions more breathing room during volatility, since the whole account acts as a buffer. The tradeoff is that a severe move against one position can drag down your entire account, potentially triggering liquidation across multiple positions simultaneously rather than containing the damage to one.

Why this matters more in DeFi than on a centralized exchange

On decentralized perpetual protocols, liquidations are executed automatically and transparently by smart contracts or a network of liquidator bots, with no human discretion or grace period. There's no customer support call that pauses a liquidation. That makes understanding your margin mode — and monitoring your margin ratio — more directly consequential than it might feel on a platform with more manual intervention.

Liquidation mechanics also interact with the protocol's funding rate: a position paying persistent negative funding erodes its margin over time even if the underlying price hasn't moved much, which can push a marginal position toward liquidation faster than expected.

Practical guidance for choosing a mode

  • Use isolated margin when testing a new strategy, trading a volatile or unfamiliar asset, or whenever you want a hard, known cap on your downside for a specific trade.
  • Use cross margin only when you're actively managing a portfolio of related positions and understand how a loss in one can consume collateral backing another — and are watching your overall account health, not just individual position health.
  • Regardless of mode, never allocate collateral you can't afford to lose, and understand that leverage amplifies both gains and losses in both directions.
