What Is BNB? Understanding Binance Coin's Utility

BNB is a cryptocurrency originally launched as an exchange token by Binance, offering trading fee discounts on the Binance exchange, and later expanded to serve as the native gas token for BNB Chain, the blockchain that hosts a wide range of DeFi, gaming, and other decentralized applications. This dual role, part exchange utility token, part blockchain gas token, makes BNB somewhat distinct from tokens that started purely as native blockchain assets from day one.

Here's a look at each of its main functions.

Fee discounts on the Binance exchange

BNB's original use case was offering discounted trading fees to users on the Binance exchange who held or used BNB to pay for those fees, an incentive structure common among centralized exchange-issued tokens as a way to encourage holding and using the exchange's own token within their platform. This function is specific to Binance's exchange and separate from BNB's role on BNB Chain itself, worth distinguishing since the two utilities operate independently of each other.

Gas payments on BNB Chain

On BNB Chain, BNB functions the same way ETH functions on Ethereum or SOL functions on Solana, it's the required token for paying transaction fees for any on-chain activity, from simple transfers to complex DeFi interactions. Staking BNB

The BNB burn mechanism

Binance has periodically executed token burns, permanently removing BNB from circulation, historically tied to a portion of exchange profits and following a publicly announced schedule and methodology. A burn reduces the total circulating supply of a token, though it's worth being clear-eyed that a burn mechanism affects supply, it does not guarantee anything about future price, and should be evaluated as a supply-side mechanic rather than as an investment thesis on its own.

Liquid staking derivatives for BNB

Because natively staked BNB is illiquid while actively delegated to a validator, liquid staking protocols on BNB Chain issue transferable tokens representing a staked position, letting holders earn staking rewards while retaining an asset usable elsewhere in DeFi for additional yield or as collateral. This is worth factoring into any assessment of BNB's risk profile specifically, separate from the technical merits or usage of BNB Chain as a blockchain in its own right.
