Transaction fees on the Primary Network

Every transaction on Avalanche's C-Chain, the EVM-compatible chain hosting most general-purpose DeFi activity, requires a fee paid in AVAX. This makes AVAX a functional necessity for interacting with Primary Network applications directly, separate from whatever specific tokens you might be trading, lending, or holding within those applications. Notably, Avalanche also burns a portion of transaction fees, permanently removing that AVAX from circulation, similar in spirit to fee-burning mechanisms found on some other major networks.

Staking for network security

AVAX is the asset staked to become a validator or delegator on Avalanche's Primary Network, with a meaningful minimum stake required to run a validator directly, and a substantially lower minimum for delegating to an existing validator instead. AVAX's staking mechanics involve a fixed lockup with no early exit once a staking duration is chosen, a meaningfully stricter commitment than networks with short cooldown periods, worth weighing carefully against your own liquidity needs before staking.
