A DeFi yield curve shows how the market-implied yield of a fixed-income-style position varies with time to maturity — similar in concept to a traditional bond yield curve, but built from on-chain fixed-yield products like Pendle's principal tokens rather than government or corporate bonds. It emerged as protocols brought the concept of "term structure" — different rates for different lengths of commitment — into DeFi's traditionally single-rate, floating-APY world.

Why DeFi needed a yield curve concept at all

Most DeFi yield historically came as a single, floating APY number: a lending market's current borrow rate, a liquidity pool's current fee yield, a staking protocol's current reward rate — all subject to change at any time based on market conditions, all without any fixed commitment period. An upward-sloping curve (longer maturities implying higher yields) suggests the market expects yields to rise over time, or that investors demand extra compensation for locking up capital longer — similar reasoning to traditional finance's term premium. A downward-sloping (inverted) curve suggests the market expects yields to fall, or that near-term uncertainty is pushing up short-maturity implied yields specifically. A flat curve suggests the market doesn't expect much change in yield across the time horizons available.

Why this matters for yield farmers

A DeFi yield curve gives farmers a way to make an explicit decision about time horizon, not just risk level: locking into a longer-maturity PT captures whatever fixed yield the market currently prices in for that horizon, useful if you believe current yields are likely to fall before that maturity arrives. Conversely, staying in short-maturity or floating positions preserves flexibility to capture a rate increase, at the cost of yield uncertainty in the meantime.

Risks in relying on a DeFi yield curve

These markets are considerably less liquid and less mature than traditional bond markets, meaning implied yields at any given maturity can be distorted by thin trading rather than genuine broad-market expectations — a real risk when trying to read too much macro signal into a still-developing on-chain market. The underlying yield source itself (staking rewards, lending rates) can also behave very differently from traditional fixed-income instruments, tied to crypto-specific dynamics like network adoption or protocol-specific incentive changes rather than monetary policy.
