What is a DeFi aggregator? How swap routing and yield aggregation find the best prices and rates across protocols.
A DeFi aggregator is a protocol or interface that searches across multiple underlying DEXs, lending markets, or yield strategies and routes a user's trade or deposit to whichever combination produces the best outcome, rather than requiring the user to compare venues manually. Aggregators exist for two main use cases: swap routing (finding the best trade execution) and yield aggregation (finding and managing the best yield-generating strategy).
Swap aggregators
When someone wants to trade one token for another, the best price for that specific trade often isn't sitting entirely on a single DEX — liquidity is fragmented across many pools, chains, and fee tiers. A swap aggregator solves this by:
- Scanning multiple DEXs and liquidity pools to find where the deepest liquidity and best price sits for the specific trade size requested.
- Splitting the trade across multiple pools, since routing an entire large trade through a single pool can cause significant slippage, while splitting it across several pools each absorbs a smaller share of the price impact.
- Comparing gas costs against price improvement, since a marginally better price spread across more pools or hops isn't worth it if the additional gas cost eats the gain.
The result is typically a better net price than manually trading on any single DEX directly, especially for larger trade sizes where slippage matters more.
Yield aggregators
On the yield side, aggregators automate the process of finding, depositing into, and managing yield-generating positions across multiple protocols. How aggregators find the best routes
Swap aggregators typically use algorithms that model each pool's liquidity depth and fee structure, computing the theoretically optimal split of a trade across available pools given the specific amount being swapped — the optimal route for a $500 swap can be entirely different from the optimal route for a $500,000 swap through the same set of pools.
Yield aggregators typically track advertised and realized rates across integrated protocols, factoring in gas costs of moving funds, to decide whether reallocating a position is worth the switching cost — chasing every marginal rate difference isn't efficient once gas is accounted for.

The risk layer aggregators add
Using an aggregator means trusting an additional smart contract layer on top of whatever underlying protocol it ultimately routes to. A bug in the aggregator's routing or vault logic can cause losses even if every underlying protocol it touches is individually sound — the aggregator is now also a single point of failure sitting between the user and their funds. There's also a transparency question: because aggregators often route dynamically and can integrate with many underlying protocols, it can be harder for a user to know at any given moment exactly which contracts are holding their funds, compared to depositing directly into a single, known protocol.
When aggregation is worth it
For swaps, aggregation is almost always worth using for anything beyond very small trade sizes, since the price improvement typically exceeds any added gas cost, and the routing risk is usually well-established for major, widely-used aggregators. For yield, aggregation is more of a tradeoff between convenience and transparency — worth it for users who want a hands-off approach and trust the aggregator's own track record, less clearly worth it for those who prefer to know exactly which protocol holds their funds at all times.
Bottom line
DeFi aggregators solve real fragmentation problems — finding the best swap price across scattered liquidity, or the best yield across scattered protocols — by automating comparisons a user would otherwise have to do manually and continuously. That convenience comes at the cost of an additional trust layer: the aggregator's own contracts sit between the user and the underlying protocols, and its risk should be evaluated on its own merits, not assumed away by the safety of whatever it ultimately routes to.
