Tokenized treasuries explained: how DeFi brings real US Treasury bill yield on-chain, and the issuer risk that comes with it.
Tokenized treasuries are digital tokens that represent ownership of, or a claim on, US Treasury bills or similar short-term government debt, issued on a blockchain so the underlying yield can be accessed, transferred, and used within DeFi. They're one of the most prominent examples of real-world assets (RWAs) — traditional, off-chain financial instruments represented on-chain — moving into the DeFi ecosystem.
Why tokenized treasuries became popular
For years, most DeFi yield came from sources entirely internal to crypto: trading fees, staking rewards, or token emissions, as described in our yield farming guide. When traditional interest rates rose meaningfully, US Treasury bills started offering a yield that was, for the first time in a while, competitive with or higher than many "safe" DeFi options like stablecoin lending — while carrying government-backed credit risk rather than smart-contract or crypto-market risk. Tokenized treasuries emerged to let DeFi users access that traditional yield directly, on-chain, without needing a traditional brokerage account.
How tokenization typically works
A regulated entity — often a registered fund or trust — purchases actual US Treasury bills with investor deposits, and issues a blockchain token representing a proportional claim on that fund's holdings. The token's value tracks the fund's net asset value, which rises over time to reflect the accrued interest the underlying Treasuries pay. Depending on the specific product, tokens might be structured to accrue value directly (a rising redemption value, similar to how some liquid staking tokens work) or to distribute periodic yield payments to holders.
What's actually backing the token
This is the most important thing to understand: a tokenized treasury's yield and safety ultimately depend on the real-world entity holding the actual Treasury bills, its custody arrangements, its regulatory compliance, and its solvency — not purely on smart contract code. This is a meaningfully different risk model from a typical DeFi protocol, where risk is mostly about code and on-chain mechanics; here, legal structure, custodian reliability, and issuer counterparty risk matter just as much as (or more than) the smart contract wrapping the token.

Access restrictions and compliance
Because these products are typically structured as regulated securities or fund shares, many tokenized treasury products restrict who can hold them — often requiring accredited investor status or completing identity verification (KYC), unlike most permissionless DeFi protocols that anyone with a wallet can use. This is a genuine tradeoff: the regulatory structure that makes the product legally sound also makes it less open and permissionless than typical DeFi.
How they connect to broader DeFi

This creates a bridge between traditional fixed-income yield and DeFi's composable ecosystem, but it also means DeFi protocols relying on tokenized treasuries inherit the off-chain counterparty and custody risk of whichever issuer backs that specific token.
Risks to weigh before using tokenized treasuries
Beyond standard smart contract risk in whatever wrapper token or protocol you're using, tokenized treasuries carry issuer risk (can the entity actually redeem tokens for the underlying value when needed), regulatory risk (rules governing these products are still evolving in most jurisdictions), and liquidity risk (redemption isn't always instant, and secondary market liquidity for the token itself may be limited). Tokenized treasuries bring real, traditional government bond yield on-chain, offering an alternative to purely crypto-native yield sources with a different risk profile — trading smart contract and depeg risk for issuer, custody, and regulatory risk. They represent a genuine bridge between TradFi and DeFi, but evaluating them requires checking the underlying legal and custodial structure, not just the token's smart contract, since the token is only as reliable as the real-world entity and Treasury holdings behind it.
