Solo mining means competing for Bitcoin block rewards entirely on your own, keeping the full reward if you succeed but facing extremely low odds and irregular payouts, while pool mining means combining your hashrate with other miners to receive smaller, far more frequent, and more predictable payouts. Which is "right" depends almost entirely on how much hashrate you control and how much payout variance you can tolerate.

How solo mining works

In solo mining, you connect your hardware directly to the Bitcoin network (typically via your own full node) rather than to a pool's server. You keep 100% of the block subsidy and transaction fees for any block you successfully find, with no pool fee deducted. How pool mining works

Mining pools aggregate hashrate from many participants and distribute rewards proportionally based on verified work contributed (measured in "shares"), regardless of who specifically finds the winning block. This converts an extremely rare, large payout into frequent, small, predictable ones — closer to a steady paycheck than a lottery ticket.

When solo mining can make sense

Solo mining is realistic mainly for operations with a meaningful share of global hashrate — large industrial miners who can reasonably expect to find blocks with some regularity on their own. The tradeoff — a small fee and reliance on a pool operator's infrastructure and honesty — is generally considered worthwhile given the alternative.

Risk considerations for both approaches

Solo miners bear full variance risk but no counterparty risk — there's no pool operator who could mismanage funds or go offline. A hybrid consideration

Some miners split hashrate across multiple pools, or occasionally solo-mine with a portion of their capacity, as a way to hedge against any single pool's downtime or policy changes while still benefiting from pooled payout stability for the bulk of their operation.
