Portfolio rebalancing is the process of periodically adjusting your holdings back toward a set of target allocations, selling a portion of assets that have grown to exceed their target weight and adding to assets that have fallen below theirs. In crypto, where individual assets can move 50% or more in a matter of weeks, allocations drift far faster than in most traditional portfolios, making rebalancing a more frequently relevant — and more frequently neglected — discipline.

Why allocations drift

Imagine a portfolio initially split 60% Bitcoin, 30% Ethereum, and 10% a smaller-cap altcoin. If the smaller-cap asset then rallies 400% while Bitcoin and Ethereum each rise a more modest 20%, the portfolio's actual composition shifts dramatically — the smaller-cap position, initially a minor 10% allocation, could now represent 25–30% of total portfolio value, all without a single new purchase being made. The portfolio has become meaningfully more concentrated in its highest-risk asset, purely through price movement rather than any deliberate decision.

Common rebalancing triggers

There are two broad approaches to deciding when to rebalance, and they can be combined.

Time-based rebalancing means reviewing and resetting allocations on a fixed schedule — monthly, quarterly, or annually — regardless of how far the portfolio has drifted at that specific moment. This is simple to implement and requires no ongoing monitoring, but it can miss significant drift that occurs shortly after a scheduled check and then reverses again before the next one.

Threshold-based rebalancing means rebalancing whenever an asset's actual weight deviates from its target by more than a predefined amount — for example, rebalancing whenever any position drifts more than 5 or 10 percentage points from its target. This responds more precisely to actual drift but requires more frequent monitoring to catch when a threshold has been crossed.

How rebalancing works mechanically

Rebalancing typically involves selling a portion of the overweight assets and using the proceeds to buy the underweight ones, bringing the portfolio back toward its original target percentages. In the example above, rebalancing back to the original 60/30/10 split would mean trimming a substantial chunk of the smaller-cap position (which grew to 25–30%) and redistributing that value into Bitcoin and Ethereum to restore their target weights.

This mechanically forces a form of discipline that runs counter to natural instinct: it means systematically trimming winners (which feels uncomfortable, since the position is performing well) and adding to laggards (which also feels uncomfortable, since it means buying more of what's underperforming). This discomfort is, in a sense, the entire point — rebalancing enforces "sell high, buy low" behavior mechanically, rather than relying on emotional judgment in the moment.

Rebalancing costs and considerations

Every rebalancing trade in crypto typically triggers a taxable event in most jurisdictions (selling an appreciated asset realizes a capital gain), along with trading fees, and potentially tax reporting complexity that should be factored into how frequently rebalancing makes sense. Very frequent rebalancing on small deviations can generate outsized fees and tax friction relative to the actual risk-management benefit gained, which is one reason many practitioners favor wider thresholds (10%+ deviation) or longer time-based intervals (quarterly or annually) over very tight, frequent adjustments.

Rebalancing during volatile periods

Crypto's sharp corrections and rallies mean rebalancing opportunities (or the need for them) can arise suddenly rather than gradually. Some investors choose to rebalance opportunistically after a particularly sharp move in either direction, in addition to (or instead of) a fixed schedule, treating a large single-move deviation as its own trigger independent of the regular calendar.

Rebalancing with stablecoins as a buffer

Some portfolio frameworks include a stablecoin allocation specifically to make rebalancing more flexible — holding a portion of the portfolio in stablecoins provides ready capital to deploy into underweight positions during a rebalance without needing to sell other volatile holdings, and provides a place to park proceeds from trimming an overweight position without immediately having to decide where to redeploy them.
