A multi-collateral stablecoin is a crypto-backed stablecoin that accepts multiple different asset types as backing, rather than relying on a single asset, spreading risk across a diversified basket instead of concentrating it in one collateral type's price behavior. A stablecoin backed entirely by one asset, ETH, for example, ties the entire system's health to that single asset's price behavior. Diversification isn't free. Each additional collateral type introduces its own oracle dependency (a reliable price feed for that specific asset), its own liquidation parameters that governance needs to set and monitor, and its own tail risks that may not be well understood at the time it's added. A system with dozens of collateral types has a larger attack surface and more places something can go wrong, compared to a simpler single-collateral system where the risks are narrower and easier to reason about, even if less diversified.

Real-world assets as a newer collateral category
The addition of tokenized real-world assets, like short-term government bonds, to multi-collateral systems represents a further diversification step beyond purely crypto-native assets, since these instruments have historically had different price and liquidity behavior than crypto markets, offering diversification against crypto-specific volatility events. How to evaluate a multi-collateral system's actual risk
The key question isn't simply "how many collateral types does this system accept," but how concentrated the actual backing is across those types in practice. A system that technically accepts a dozen collateral types but has 80% of its backing in one volatile asset offers far less real diversification benefit than the type list alone would suggest. Checking the actual collateral composition, not just the list of accepted asset types, gives a much clearer picture of a multi-collateral stablecoin's true risk concentration.
Correlation matters as much as count
Diversification only reduces risk to the extent that the different collateral types don't move in lockstep with each other. A basket that includes ETH, a liquid staking derivative of ETH, and a wrapped version of ETH from another chain technically counts as three collateral types, but all three are likely to crash together during a broad market downturn, offering far less true diversification than a basket spreading risk across genuinely uncorrelated categories, like crypto assets alongside tokenized short-term Treasuries, whose price behavior is driven by entirely different market forces.
