The core tradeoff

A seed phrase backup has exactly one job: survive until the moment you need it, then work correctly at that moment. Everything else — cost, ease of setup, portability — is secondary to that core requirement. Paper and metal make different tradeoffs against that requirement.

Paper is written or printed, and while durable against ordinary handling, ordinary paper (and standard ink) degrades under conditions that are more common than most people assume: house fires, burst pipes, basement flooding, or even long-term humidity and fading over years of storage. Metal backups use stamped, engraved, or punched letters into steel or a similarly resistant alloy, designed specifically to survive house fires (steel has a much higher melting point than the temperatures reached in typical residential fires), water exposure of any duration, and physical impacts that would tear or destroy paper. The core information — the letters themselves — remains legible under conditions that would make a paper backup unreadable or gone entirely.

Cost comparison

Paper backup costs essentially nothing — a pen and a piece of paper you likely already own. Metal backup products range from inexpensive DIY stamp kits (where you punch letters yourself into blank plates) to premium pre-engineered products with more elaborate assembly and tamper-evidence features, typically costing anywhere from a modest amount to several times that for higher-end options. For most individual holders, a mid-range metal kit represents a small, one-time cost relative to the value it's protecting, especially for any holding beyond a trivial amount.

Setup complexity

Paper backup takes seconds: write the words down legibly, done. Metal backup requires more deliberate effort — stamping or engraving each letter takes noticeably longer, and DIY kits require care to avoid mistakes (a mis-stamped letter can be as damaging as a fire, since it corrupts the backup's accuracy). Pre-engineered metal products with letter tiles or included stamping guides reduce this friction somewhat but still take meaningfully longer than writing on paper.

When paper is still a reasonable choice

Paper backup isn't obsolete — for very small holdings, temporary wallets, or as an interim solution before setting up a more durable metal backup, paper is a legitimate, zero-cost starting point that's far better than no backup at all. The mistake isn't using paper temporarily; it's treating a paper backup as permanent for holdings that have grown to meaningful value without ever upgrading.

A combined approach

Many experienced holders use both: a metal backup as the primary, durable long-term storage, kept in a secure location, with the setup process itself using a paper draft only briefly and then destroying it once the metal version is verified correct. Verification matters regardless of method — after creating any backup, test that it correctly restores a wallet (using a fresh, separate device, never the one holding the original) before relying on it, since a backup you've never tested is only a hope, not a guarantee.

For anything beyond a trivial amount, metal backup is worth the modest additional cost and setup time given how much more reliably it survives the disasters — fire and water — that destroy far more seed phrases than theft ever does.
