Staking Solana means delegating your SOL tokens to a validator, who uses that delegated stake to participate in the network's proof-of-stake consensus, in exchange for a share of the staking rewards the validator earns. You keep ownership of your tokens the entire time, delegation doesn't transfer custody, it just assigns your stake's voting weight to a validator of your choice.

Before you stake: wallet setup

  • Commission rate: the percentage of staking rewards the validator keeps for themselves before passing the rest to delegators. Lower isn't automatically better if it comes with worse reliability.
  • Uptime and vote credit history: validators that miss votes or go offline earn fewer rewards for their delegators, since rewards are tied to actual participation in consensus.
  • Stake concentration: delegating to an already-massive validator adds to network centralization; smaller, well-performing validators support a healthier, more decentralized validator set.
  • Self-stake and reputation: validators with meaningful self-stake and a longer track record have more skin in the game.

The delegation process

Once you've picked a validator, the process is generally: create a stake account (a separate account that holds your delegated SOL, distinct from your main wallet balance), specify the amount to delegate, and choose the target validator.
