Why slots were limited and auctioned in the first place
Polkadot's relay chain provides shared consensus and security to connected parachains, but validating additional parachains adds real computational and coordination load to the relay chain's validator set. To manage this load responsibly, Polkadot originally capped the number of parachain slots available at any given time, allocating them through auctions rather than handing them out on a first-come, first-served basis or unlimited access.
How a slot auction worked
Projects wanting a parachain slot needed to bid DOT tokens, committed (bonded) for the duration of the lease period if they won. Since most new projects didn't have enough DOT of their own to bid competitively, the standard approach was a crowdloan: the project asked its community and supporters to contribute DOT toward its bid, in exchange for some reward (often the project's own native token) once the parachain slot was secured. Contributed DOT was locked for the lease duration and returned to contributors afterward — it wasn't spent, just temporarily committed to the project's bid.
Auctions ran as a candle auction variant, where the actual ending time was randomized and only revealed after the fact, specifically to prevent bidders from being able to snipe the auction with a last-second bid, since nobody could know for certain when the auction would actually end while it was still active.
What winning a slot actually got you
A winning project received a lease — a fixed period during which its parachain was connected to the relay chain and validated by the shared validator set — rather than a permanent connection. At the end of the lease, the project would need to win another auction (or otherwise requalify) to keep its parachain slot, or the chain would need to fall back to a different connection method.
Evolution toward more flexible access
The original slot auction model, while functional, imposed real costs: competing projects needed to raise and lock significant DOT, auctions created real winner/loser dynamics within the ecosystem, and a fixed number of long-term leases limited how many chains could connect to the relay chain at once. Polkadot's ecosystem has since moved toward more flexible, on-demand parachain access models that let chains connect to the relay chain for shared security without necessarily requiring a full slot auction win, reducing the capital commitment and competitive bottleneck the original design imposed.

Honest tradeoffs
The auction model favored well-organized projects with strong community fundraising ability, which meant slot access wasn't purely a function of technical merit — marketing and community-building mattered as much as engineering quality in securing a slot. Crowdloan contributors also took on real opportunity cost, locking DOT for extended periods in exchange for rewards that depended on the connected project's eventual success, a genuine risk worth weighing rather than assuming crowdloan participation was risk-free.
