DeFi Protocols Explained: A Beginner's Field Guide
A beginner's guide to DeFi protocols: lending markets, AMMs, liquid staking, and derivatives platforms explained and compared in plain English.
DeFi protocols are the individual applications — built from smart contracts on public blockchains — that let people lend, trade, stake, or borrow crypto without a bank or broker, and they generally fall into a handful of recognizable categories once you look past each project's specific branding.
If DeFi is the overall system, protocols are the actual products within it — the specific apps you connect a wallet to and interact with. Knowing the main categories makes it much easier to evaluate any new protocol you come across, since most fit into one of a few well-established patterns.
Lending and borrowing protocols
Lending protocols like Aave and Compound let users deposit assets to earn interest, or post collateral to borrow other assets. Interest rates are typically set algorithmically based on the pool's utilization rate — the ratio of borrowed to supplied funds — rather than by a human loan officer. Borrowing is generally overcollateralized: you must post more value than you borrow, and if your collateral's value falls too far, it can be automatically liquidated. Decentralized exchanges (AMMs)
Decentralized exchanges (DEXs) like Uniswap let users swap tokens directly against a liquidity pool rather than through a matched order book. Anyone can supply liquidity to these pools and earn a share of trading fees, but doing so exposes them to impermanent loss if the pooled assets' prices diverge. Liquid staking protocols
Liquid staking protocols let users stake an asset like ETH to help secure its network while receiving a liquid token in return that represents their staked position and can still be used elsewhere in DeFi — for lending, as collateral, or in liquidity pools. Stablecoin protocols
Stablecoin protocols issue tokens designed to hold a steady value, usually pegged to the US dollar, using mechanisms ranging from fiat reserves to overcollateralized crypto vaults to algorithmic supply adjustments. Stablecoins underpin a huge share of DeFi activity, since they let users transact and earn yield without taking on the price volatility of a typical crypto asset. Derivatives protocols
Derivatives protocols let users trade leveraged perpetual futures, options, or synthetic assets on-chain. These are generally the most complex and highest-risk category, since positions stay open over time and are exposed to funding costs, oracle dependencies, and liquidation risk beyond what a simple spot swap involves.

How to evaluate any protocol you come across
Regardless of category, a few questions apply broadly: How long has it operated with meaningful TVL without an exploit? How many independent audits has it had? Is its yield funded by real fee revenue or mostly token emissions? What happens to your funds in a worst-case scenario — does it have a funded backstop, or would losses be socialized directly across depositors? Getting started safely
Start with the simplest category you understand well — most beginners start with a basic swap on a DEX or a deposit into an established lending market — before exploring more complex categories like derivatives or credit delegation. Set up a wallet with strong security practices first, and only commit funds you can afford to lose while you're still learning how a given protocol actually behaves.

Nearly every DeFi protocol you'll encounter is a variation on lending, trading, staking, stablecoin issuance, or derivatives — learning these core categories, and the questions to ask about any protocol within them, will let you evaluate new projects far faster than researching each one entirely from scratch.
