None of these models has yet achieved the scale or reliability of traditional advertising revenue, and individual applications built on decentralized protocols still need to find sustainable ways to fund their own development and operations even if the underlying protocol itself is open.
Practical tradeoffs for everyday users
For an everyday user, the practical tradeoffs of decentralized social platforms include a generally smaller existing user base compared to established Web2 platforms, sometimes less polished user interfaces since development resources are often more limited than a well-funded traditional platform, and a learning curve around managing a wallet-based identity rather than a simple username and password. These are real adoption frictions that any individual user has to weigh against the genuine data ownership and portability benefits before deciding whether switching, or at least maintaining a presence, on a decentralized platform is worth the tradeoff.
