CryptoKitties was a blockchain game launched in late 2017 that let players breed, collect, and trade unique digital cats, becoming one of the first mainstream applications to popularize non-fungible tokens and, at its peak, generating enough transaction volume to visibly congest the entire Ethereum network.

Before CryptoKitties, the idea of a uniquely identifiable, non-interchangeable token wasn't widely known outside a small technical audience. Most attention on Ethereum centered on fungible tokens and the ICO boom happening at the time. CryptoKitties changed that by building a genuinely fun, accessible consumer product around a then-new technical standard, and its unexpected popularity became an early, very public stress test of what Ethereum could actually handle.

How the game worked

Each CryptoKitty was a unique digital cat with randomly generated genetic traits determining its appearance and rarity. Players could:

  • Breed two kitties together to produce a new kitty with a combination of genetic traits inherited from its parents, introducing an element of collecting and strategy around desirable trait combinations.

This breeding mechanic — creating new, unique assets through combining existing ones — was a genuinely novel application at the time and helped demonstrate that NFTs could support more complex, evolving digital assets rather than just static collectibles.

Establishing the ERC-721 standard

CryptoKitties' development helped drive the creation and adoption of ERC-721, the Ethereum token standard specifically designed for non-fungible, uniquely identifiable tokens, as distinct from the fungible ERC-20 standard used for typical cryptocurrencies. Establishing a common technical standard mattered enormously for the broader NFT ecosystem that followed: it gave wallets, marketplaces, and other applications a consistent way to recognize, display, and transfer unique tokens across different projects, rather than each project inventing its own incompatible approach.

Pending transaction backlogs grew dramatically, and average gas fees across the entire network spiked — meaning users trying to do completely unrelated things on Ethereum (send regular payments, interact with other applications) faced significantly higher costs and delays purely because of demand from one game's activity.
