Network effects and monetary premium
Bitcoin was the first cryptocurrency to demonstrate that a decentralized, scarce digital asset could hold value without a central issuer. That first-mover status compounded over more than a decade into the deepest liquidity, the widest institutional recognition, and the most battle-tested security of any blockchain network. Altcoins, even well-established ones, are still working to build comparable trust and adoption, and most never will.
This network effect is self-reinforcing: more users and capital increase security and liquidity, which attracts more users and capital. It's a genuine structural advantage, not just brand recognition.
Design philosophy: conservatism vs iteration

Changes to consensus rules are rare, heavily scrutinized, and almost always implemented as backward-compatible soft forks. Decentralization tradeoffs
Decentralization is expensive — it typically means slower transaction throughput and less flexibility. Many altcoins optimize the other direction: faster consensus, more validators controlled by fewer entities, or centralized components (like a foundation controlling upgrades) in exchange for performance or features like smart contracts.
Neither approach is objectively correct — it depends on what the network is trying to be. A payments-focused chain might reasonably prioritize speed; a settlement and store-of-value network like Bitcoin reasonably prioritizes robustness. Risk considerations
Altcoins as a category carry meaningfully different risk profiles than Bitcoin: smaller networks are more vulnerable to concentration of ownership, exchange delistings, project abandonment, or outright scams. That doesn't mean every altcoin is risky in the same way, but it does mean the due diligence bar should be higher, not lower, than for the most established network.
