Bitcoin Scarcity and the Stock-to-Flow Model Explained

The stock-to-flow model measures an asset's scarcity by dividing its existing stockpile (stock) by its annual rate of new production (flow), and a Bitcoin-specific version of this model was popularized to argue that Bitcoin's programmed scarcity should drive its price higher over time. The model gained significant attention in the crypto community, but it has also faced substantial and, in many cases, fairly damning criticism.

Understanding both the concept and its critiques is important for evaluating scarcity-based arguments about Bitcoin's value with a clear head.

What stock-to-flow measures

Stock-to-flow originated as a way to compare the scarcity of commodities, particularly precious metals. Gold, for example, has an extremely high stock-to-flow ratio because the total amount of gold ever mined vastly exceeds the amount mined in any given year — gold is scarce not just in absolute terms but in terms of how slowly its supply grows relative to what already exists.

The ratio is calculated as:

Stock-to-flow = existing supply ÷ annual new supply

A higher ratio implies an asset is harder to inflate through new production, which the model treats as a proxy for scarcity-driven value.

Applying the model to Bitcoin

Bitcoin's issuance is set by its protocol, not by market forces or discovery, which makes its future flow highly predictable. Roughly every four years, an event called "the halving" cuts the rate of new bitcoin issuance in half. Each halving increases Bitcoin's stock-to-flow ratio, since the existing stock keeps growing while the flow of new supply shrinks.

An analyst popularized a model in 2019 that took this stock-to-flow ratio and fit it to Bitcoin's historical price data, producing a mathematical relationship that appeared to track with past price cycles reasonably well, especially in hindsight. The model was then used to project future price levels based on projected future stock-to-flow ratios following subsequent halvings.

Why the model attracted criticism

Correlation is not causation. Fitting a curve to historical price data after the fact doesn't establish that scarcity, as measured by stock-to-flow, is actually the causal driver of price. Bitcoin's price has been influenced by many factors — adoption trends, regulatory news, macroeconomic conditions, speculative cycles — that stock-to-flow doesn't account for at all.

Ignores demand entirely. The model focuses exclusively on supply-side scarcity and says nothing about demand. An asset can be extremely scarce and still have little to no value if demand doesn't exist. Critics have pointed out that many scarce things (some rare stamps, certain historical artifacts) don't command enormous financial value, showing scarcity alone is insufficient to explain price.

Overfitting risk. With a limited number of historical data points (Bitcoin has only had a handful of halvings), it's statistically easy to fit a curve that looks impressive in hindsight but has weak predictive power going forward. Critics, including some quantitative researchers, have argued the original model showed signs of this kind of overfitting.

Failed predictions. The model made specific, falsifiable price projections for certain time periods. When actual prices diverged meaningfully from those projections, it raised significant doubts about the model's reliability as a forecasting tool, even among some who found the underlying scarcity narrative intellectually interesting.

A balanced view

None of this means scarcity is irrelevant to Bitcoin's value proposition — a fixed, transparent, and predictable supply schedule is a genuinely distinctive property compared to most currencies and many commodities. What critics dispute is the specific claim that a formula based purely on stock-to-flow can reliably predict price, given that price is a function of both supply and demand, and demand is inherently harder to model.
